Temporal
Temporal (2018) 4:47 Min. investigate various psychological states of mind one could encounter on a day to day bases. Through the use of light and space as well as color in its various representational facets, this performance engages not only the performer but the audience with different sounds, mood lighting, and impending circumstance. With this work, I was interested in challenging my endurance physically and mentally, being submerged underwater ended up being the easy part, it was floating in a fish tank three and a half feet off the ground which was the most enduring. I would like the piece to pose questions about other aspects that pertain to temporality within our lives such as memory.
Ligado
Ligado (2018) 3:32 Min. is an effort to explore gender roles and the conscious/unconscious regulations implemented upon children to abide by social norms through a personal dialogue. The emphasis in the piece surrounds feminine attributes that are corrected in place of the masculine. I chose to focus on a spectrum of time during my childhood where constant verbal and physical check to suppress my flamboyant ways as a young homosexual male were always subject to regulation and its origins could be traced back to a pair of high heels I was caught trying on. My piece is made up of several working parts which utilize the body, materials and the space involved.
Practitioning a Line
Practitioning a Line (2018) 4:12 Min. Is a performance that pays homage to the prehistoric art in cave paintings as well as land art by implementing simple recognizable symbols onto modern structures. The material I used for this particular piece was plaster and marble dust, which I casted in the shape of a helmet to wear in order to draw these symbols blindly and with my head. In this performance, I wanted to focus on the simple gesture of a line as I try and envision it with my mind while physically using my mind to draw a line on the ground. The 1368ft. stretch of the runway where I performed presented a challenge which I combated with endurance as I had to push most of my body weight to form this line. The aftermath of this gesture was somewhat beautiful because of its simple imperfections that deviated from the initial idea of a straight line.
Practitioning a Body
Practitioning a Body (2018) 5:42 Min. is a companion piece I felt needed to be done in order continue on this trajectory of public art and the constant urge to leave a human footprint behind. This piece by far was the most vulnerable because I felt as though the performance could have been halted at any time as I walked around campus blindly within just my underwear and a helmet. The vulnerable states I put myself do less damage to my self- esteem and in a way free me of past imposed self-regulation and as I draw a body onto these structures, I feel as though I am leaving these insecurities behind. These gestures are temporal and momentary because of the chalky material used to create them but if feel as though they will exist longer in memory for those who caught a glimpse during and after the performance.
